Bible Verses of the Day
51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. [1 Corinthians 15:51-57, ESV]

The FCC has proposed a $6 million fine for the scammer who used voice-cloning tech to impersonate President Biden in a series of illegal robocalls during a New Hampshire primary election. It’s more about robocalls than AI, but the agency is clearly positioning this as a warning to other would-be high-tech scammers.
As you may recall, in January, many voters in New Hampshire received a call purporting to be a message from the president telling them not to vote in the upcoming primary. This was, of course, fake — a voice clone of President Biden using tech that has become widely available over the last couple years.
While creating a fake voice has been possible for a long time, generative AI platforms have made it trivial: Dozens of services offer cloned voices with few restrictions or oversight. You can make your own Biden voice pretty easily with a minute or two of his speeches, which naturally are easily found online.

A University of Washington team has developed an artificial intelligence system that lets a user wearing headphones look at a person speaking for three to five seconds to "enroll" them.
The system, called "Target Speech Hearing," then cancels all other sounds in the environment and plays just the enrolled speaker's voice in real time even as the listener moves around in noisy places and no longer faces the speaker.
"We tend to think of AI now as web-based chatbots that answer questions," said senior author Shyam Gollakota, a UW professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering.
"But in this project, we develop AI to modify the auditory perception of anyone wearing headphones, given their preferences. With our devices you can now hear a single speaker clearly even if you are in a noisy environment with lots of other people talking."
